Guiding Learners of All Ages

Back to School for Grownups was established by Laura Gilbert, Ph.D. in 2009 to offer practical information and guidance for adult learners. In 2011 Laura published two books for traditional age learners, How to Save $50,000 on College and Graduate School on a Budget.  Strategies and tips show readers “how to get the education you want for a price you can afford” and “how to define your life by what you learn – not by what you owe”.  All Laura’s books are available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble in paperback and e-reader formats.  Watch for free downloads for Amazon Prime members.

Laura’s Background

After growing up in a small farming community, Laura began her studies in musical theater and flute performance at the Boston Conservatory of Music.  Two years later “life” intervened.  Over the next few years Laura moved across the country, married, had four children and finished her bachelor’s degree in music with a triple major in classical flute, piano and voice from Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minnesota, a new school designed for adult learners.  As a professional musician Laura performed in various venues, founded and led the Minnesota Suzuki Flute Festival and taught students from age 2 – adult.

At age 31, as a single parent in need of a career change, Laura returned to school  to earn a Master of Arts degree in Industrial Relations.  A decade into a successful second career in Human Resource Management, a favorite professor guided her to a Ph.D. program in Educational Psychology where Laura earned a doctorate conducting research about gifted/creative individuals in the workplace.

At the age of 48, following the college graduation of her youngest child, Laura returned to the classroom to change careers once again, this time to fulfill her lifelong desire to study law.  Three years later Laura became a licensed attorney in Minnesota and began her third career as a data privacy attorney.

Today Laura leads Back to School for Grownups, LLC, provides consulting services to corporate and higher education clients, and teaches undergraduate and graduate students of all ages.

Dr. Laura Gilbert is available for interviews to promote her newly released book, Graduate School on a Budget and to provide much needed guidance for students planning for college in today’s education landscape.
